So today I told my shrink that I watch Hannibal, and it turned out that she'd tried and had to give up after a Certain Scene in episode two. Then we made jokes about me becoming a cannibal for the rest of my appointment. My shrink is awesome.

Week of May 13:

Television:

Hannibal 1x01, "Aperitif" (To get my sister started. She was less than pleased when I happened to mention afterward that the show was in danger of cancellation. I guess I can't really blame her.)
Warehouse 13 4x12, "The Big Snag"
Doctor Who 7xwhatever, "The Silver Thing That Neil Gaiman Wrote" (So glad the finale is next week. Or was last week, by the time I post this. It's going to have to be mindblowing to make me actually care.)
Hannibal 1x08, "Fromage"
Elementary 1x23 and 1x24, "The Awkwardly Wielded-Together Finale Episodes That Have Two Separate Names Instead of Just Being One Long Episode WTF" (But that was the only bad thing about it. Also, I would just like to say that for once, I totally called it. I am a genius. And I am totally going to gloat because I never, ever see the twists coming, no matter how obvious.)

Books:

Blackout, Mira Grant

Because of some controversies over picking the same episodes, I promised we would have a final vote-off between the top two episodes in any season where we already discussed one of those episodes during the last rewatch just to make it fair and to be sure that everyone in the community wants to truly rehash that episode again and it didn't just win because of deep divisions among the other options.  Many of the results were close and one of them we have to do a vote-off on because there was actually a tie.

I finished reading Mira Grant's Newsflesh trilogy. To the surprise of no one, the commentary I meant for the last book, Blackout, for next week's media consumption post turned into a multi-paragraph essay, so it gets its own post.

Spoilers for the whole trilogy.Collapse )

So far I get Pedroia and Buckholz as our All-stars.  If Victorino were healthy, he is a real star that's for sure.  Jacoby is excellent too but his AVE is too lov.  John Lester is pretty solid these days with Tazawa and Uehara consistent, stabilizing forces in the pen, though I wonder how long they can log this much work
.
Then there are some unsung people like Daniel Nava, to some extent Napoli though his AVE and strikeout totals are sub-par.
...and of course, the once beloved David Ortiz who is now in the baseball limbo of suspicion.  I myself like Nava's emergence as a solid player they can rely on.

Righjt now they are playing like two teams:  the major league team and the AAA team.  Farrell is proving to be a hands on manager who is helping the team develop.

Week of May 6:

Television:

Doctor Who 7x11, "The Crimson Horror" (Yay Vastra and Jenny! Yay Clara feeling like an actual character to me for about thirty seconds! Yay spoilerCollapse ) And yet . . . somehow I still didn't care that much. idk, folks. idk.)
Elementary 1x21, "A Landmark Story"
Hannibal 1x06, "Entreé"
Scott and Bailey, series one (This SHOW. It is a show about women with men in supporting roles, and it's REALLY GOOD. And from what I've seen on the flist circle, IT GETS BETTER. And I don't care if it turns to crap, as long as it keeps being about women getting shit done.)
Warehouse 13 4x12, "Parks and Recreation" (W13, I usually love you for your inclusiveness, but if you don't stop making spoilerCollapse ) about Artie's pain, we are going to have words. Even if I totally cried anyway. Also, what was up with Steve's buying-a-vowel joke about written Chinese? AWKWARD. DON'T DO THAT.)
Hannibal 1x07, "Sorbet"
Elementary 1x23, "Risk Management"
Scott and Bailey series two (Still awesome. Series three just happened/is possibly still happening, so I'll be watching that as soon as I can get hold of it.)

Books:

Deadline, Mira Grant (the sequel to Feed and the second part of the i>Newflesh</i> trilogy. Not as compellingly readable as the first book, which is a problem because it makes it a lot harder to overlook the author's flaws. This got kinda long, and also has a spoiler for the third book that is only obvious if you've actually read the second.Collapse ) And that's without going into the problematic stuff in the story itself, like the past tense, offscreen, heretofore unmentioned queer romance wherein one woman is safely dead and the other already safely in love with a man, and stuff about India that seems logical but doesn't sit with me very well. Still, the middle part of a trilogy is the trickiest part, and I wouldn't be sitting here complaining about it if I hadn't liked it well enough to read it - more than once, even - and look forward to the final installment. Plus, hey, Dr Shannon Abbey, who is awesome enough all on her own to make Deadline worth reading.)

Lately I find myself doing a lot of "day in the life" type posts on Facebook, and sometimes they can get to the length of the "day in the life" LJ posts that I used to do, so I thought, maybe once in a while I'll just cross-post something. Because part of what I've always valued about my "day in the life" posts is the ability to go back months or years later and re-read, and go, "oh yeah, that," or "wow, I don't remember that at all." And you can't really do that on FB because it sucks at archiving and browsing old stuff.

So something I've posted about several times recently on FB is how Ruthie has been wearing her hair very short for a while now and often gets mistaken for a boy. It doesn't bother her, which I'm glad about. She usually just corrects the person very matter-of-factly. The short hair looks really good on her and she likes it so she isn't going to let anyone spoil that for her! Meanwhile Isaac, until recently, had gotten quite shaggy and was mistaken for a girl at least once recently. He got a haircut this past weekend so I think that will slow down the gender confusion, although his hair is still longer than a "typical" boy cut, and incidentally longer than his sister's hair too. I think it's funny that up until this last haircut the longest-haired people in our family were Isaac and my brother. Now Isaac's and mine are probably about equal, and Ruthie's is shorter than both of us.

Anyway, with all of that as prologue, here's the "day in the life" that I posted to FB tonight:

Ruthie and I stumbled upon a little festival at Whole Foods while Isaac was having baseball practice. I guess they were celebrating 5 years since that Whole Foods opened (which makes me feel old because I remember it) and they had tents with free food, pony rides, and so forth. It was fun. Ruthie got to see a pony pooping in graphic detail, which made quite an impression. ;)

Just as it was about to be Ruthie's turn, both ponies pulled loose from their handlers and trotted away across the parking lot. It turned out that they were freaked by the drums played by the live band, which had just started playing. The band stopped playing and the ponies calmed down and Ruthie got her ride.

We loaded up on free samples (I had seconds of the apple pie) and then went into the store to shop. Inside, they had more free samples, and the lady giving out tastes of bread said "Your son has very nice manners" and Ruthie said cheerily "Actually I'm a girl" and the lady was very embarrassed. Ruthie was even wearing a skirt! Although it was hard to see under her long shirt, and she was also wearing her baseball cap. I wish people wouldn't feel embarrassed for making that mistake. It's understandable and not a big deal, or at least, it shouldn't be. Then I feel bad for their embarrassment, so I try to reassure them, and I end up almost sort of apologizing for Ruthie being a girl, LOL, WTF.

Then we retrieved Isaac and came home, and Isaac wanted to watch a funny YouTube video he had seen at school, and one thing led to another, next thing you know I'm explaining what a condom is. Ruthie: "I'm never wearing one of those!! 'Cause I'm a girl!"
